Poetry Out Loud

Ann Taylor (1782-1866)

Ann Taylor was born in England in 1782. She is best known for her work on children’s poems and stories with her sister, Jane, author of such well known poems as “The Star” (more easily recognized as lyrics for the nursery rhyme, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”). As early as 1799, Ann’s poetry began to be published. Along with her sister, she published such works as Rhymes for the Nursery (1806), and City Scenes: or, A Peep Into London (1809). Independently she wrote Wedding Among the Flowers in 1808. After several more joint volumes, Taylor married and ceased publishing poetry for some time. Only in the late 1820’s did Taylor begin to publish her poetry again. She died in 1866.
