Poetry Out Loud

J. V. Cunningham (1911-1985)

J.V. Cunningham was born in Cumberland, Maryland in 1911. He completed high school in 1927, but his education was interrupted by the death of his father and the financial difficulties that resulted. Cunningham vainly tried to find work during the Great Depression but was often without food or a place to live. After several years, Yvor Winters discovered him and invited him to study at Stanford University, where he completed both his bachelor’s and graduate degrees. He taught at a number of other prestigious universities, such as the University of Chicago, Brandeis, and Harvard, as well as Stanford. Cunningham’s works of poetry include The Helmsman (1942), Doctor Drink (1950), To What Strangers, What Welcome (1964), Selected Poems (1971), and two posthumous volumes: Let Thy Words Be Few (1986) and The Poems of J.V. Cunningham (1997). He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in poetry, a National Institute of Arts and Letters grant, a National Endowment for the Arts grant and the Academy of American Poets fellowship. He died in 1985 of heart failure.
